野球選手に‘クラッチ’は最高の賛辞～松井秀喜が８月のMLB Clutch Performerに選ばれたぞ～

ヤンキースの松井秀喜が"Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Month Presented by Pepsi" for Augustに選ばれた。
何とも長たらしい名前の賞だ。
今日はＮＨＫの中継で観ていたが、イニング間に否応なく聞こえてきた主音声では、
失格解説者高橋直樹が不勉強を露呈していた。
あれだけ論議を呼んだ‘ニュー・ジョバ・ルール’についても詳細を知らないのには驚かされた。
この賞についても‘初耳’と抜かしていたが２００７年から始まっている。
月間賞と年間賞がある。
月間賞は両リーグ合わせた３０チームの中から６人の候補者がノミネートされ、
その中からファンがオンライン投票で選ぶ。
当選するのはオンリー・ワンだからまさにＭＬＢのベストということになる。

８月の候補者は以下の６人だった。

Hideki Matsui, OF, Yankees: After a lukewarm first half of the season, Godzilla reemerged in August, dialing in eight jacks and plating 25 runs. Four of those dingers came in an Aug. 21-23 series at Fenway Park against the Red Sox. Of course, any big-time effort notched under the spotlight of Yankees-Red Sox is immediate grounds for clutch consideration. In addition to that heavy hacking against his team's arch-rival, Matsui was even more fearsome in close-and-late situations, batting a staggering .400 with two homers and four ribbies in those moments. As if that wasn't enough, he became the first Bomber since Mickey Mantle in 1966 to rack up three multi-homer performances in a seven-game stretch, adding an historical twist to an undeniably clutch month.

Miguel Cabrera, 1B, Tigers: Finished the month with a .343 average, seven long balls, 25 RBIs and a .611 slugging percentage.

Kendry Morales, 1B, Angels: Had a red-hot August batting .576 with runners in scoring position while collecting 27 RBIs.

Carlos Pena, 1B, Rays: Hit 12 homers with 29 RBIs and a .685 slugging percentage last month. Delivered a walk-off single on August 22 to beat the Rangers.

Ubaldo Jimenez, SP, Rockies: Won five of his six outings in August while posting a 1.77 ERA - including a must-win Aug. 23 start against Tim Lincecum and the Giants.

Cliff Lee, SP, Phillies: The southpaw is 5-1 with a 1.80 ERA and 44 strikeouts against only six walks over 45 innings of work since joining the National League.

野手４人の比較でいえば数字だけを見るとやや微妙だが松井が‘勝者’になった。
３度のマルチＨＲ，特にフェンウェイでの爆発はインパクトがあったのだろう。

過去に何度も書いたが私は松井秀喜が‘clutch hitter’と呼ばれるのが、
彼のファンとして最も快感であり、誇りでもある。
この感覚は‘記録の王’より‘記憶の長嶋’の方を圧倒的に好きだったことに通じる。
ここ一番のチャンスで打つ、これぞピンチという難局を切り抜ける。
野球選手に‘クラッチ’は最高の賛辞だ。

かつて松井秀喜はアンケートで‘ワールドシリーズの最終戦、９回２アウト一打同点・逆転のシチュエーションで打席に立たせたい打者ナンバー・ワン’になったことがある。
その後は怪我を含め劣化したのは否めないが、今年まさにその舞台が現実化する可能性がある。
そしてそこで結果を出す松井の姿を夢見る。

ここをみると過去のMLB Clutch Performerが見られる。
受賞者はヤンキースの選手が圧倒的に多い。
ファン投票で決まるから全国区の強みを発揮するのだろうか。
日本からも投票できる。
今回は私も参加した。

因みに完全な無駄知識だが、ヤンキースのブルペンに実力的にも名前的にも
この賞に最も縁遠いPhil COKEというレフティがいるが、彼はPEPSIを愛飲しているそうだ。
