A
Alex Rodriguez
Imagine where the Yankees would be without A-Rod this season. The AL's top MVP candidate leads the league in homers, RBI and controversy. Will this be his swan song in the Bronx?
Derek Jeter
The captain continues to be the most consistent player in town, getting on base, scoring runs and putting up great numbers with runners in scoring position (.432) - especially with two outs (.528).
Jorge Posada
Having his finest all-around year at the plate, joining A-Rod and Jeter as the only players to carry the load all year. Catchers tend to wear down in the second half, which would hurt Yanks.
A-
Mariano Rivera
April was a disaster, but after blowing his first two save opportunities, Rivera has notched 11 in a row, recapturing his usual place among elite closers in the game.
B
Chien-Ming Wang
Missed the first three weeks with a hammy injury, but has reestablished himself as Yankees' ace with six straight wins and eight of last nine before the break.
Roger Clemens
First month back was a roller coaster, but two eight-inning, one-run games before the break showed that there's still some gas left in the Rocket's tank.
B-
Scott Proctor
Workhorse ranks fourth among AL relievers in games and innings. Needs to walk fewer batters, but hasn't allowed a run since his bonfire on the dugout steps.
Miguel Cairo
Has played more first base than expected thanks to injuries, but hasn't been the answer at the position. Still a valuable reserve infielder.
C
Andy Pettitte
Grade would have been much higher three weeks ago, but he was hit hard in three of last four starts. Not a good sign for the veteran heading into the second half.
Melky Cabrera
There isn't one outstanding aspect to his game, but Cabrera has improved the outfield play since taking over in center and done enough at the plate to contribute.
Luis Vizcaino
Overall numbers look scary, but he led the team in June with a 0.77 ERA and has become one of the more consistent arms in the bullpen.
Doug Mientkiewicz
Golden glove more than made up for his weak bat before wrist injury sidelined him on June 2. If Yanks don't get a new 1B by the deadline, he'll take back the position next month.
Mike Myers
Strange days for the southpaw specialist: lefties are hitting .321 (17-for-53) against him, but righties are batting a paltry .169 (10-for-59) this season.
Ron Villone:
The lefthander hasn't been placed in many pressure situations, but he has walked just six batters in 18 1/3 innings, getting the job done when called upon.
Mike Mussina
Shaky start and hamstring injury looked to doom Mussina's year, but he rebounded with 3.44 ERA in June. Now, if he could just start winning some games.
Brian Bruney
Best ERA on the team among regular pitchers, but his 25 walks in 35 innings are simply too many. Bruney's strikeout rate, once his strength, is also down.
C-
Hideki Matsui
Came back strong after early DL stint, but has been unable to sustain his offense. His .259 average with RISP is weak.
Robinson Cano
Unable to follow his big 2006 second half, His production has been less than what the Yankees expected. He may not be a .340 hitter, but he should be better than .274.
Jason Giambi
Giambi has made more headlines for his involvement with the Mitchell investigation than his play thanks to a foot injury that has shelved him since May 30.
D
Kyle Farnsworth
The stats don't look bad, but his performance has been erratic, at best. His strikeouts are down, but at least his back hasn't flared up this season - even if his temper has.
Bobby Abreu
Abreu's Jekyll-and-Hyde act has been one of the biggest factors in the team's sluggish first half. When he hits, the team soars; when he doesn't, it snores. Yanks need repeat of his 2006 second half.
Johnny Damon
Ranks sixth on the team in runs scored while collecting only 16 extra-base hits. Damon's nagging injuries have hampered him, though the move to DH has helped him stay in the lineup.
Wil Nieves
Only reason the light-hitting backup catcher doesn't get an F is his work with Mike Mussina, which contributed to the hurler's strong June.
The Kids
Chase Wright, Tyler Clippard and Matt DeSalvo each gave the Yankees a glimmer of hope with their big-league debuts, but none could sustain the momentum long enough to stay in the majors.
F
Kei Igawa
Did the Yankees really commit $54 million (including posting fee and luxury tax) to this guy? Igawa's transition from Japan has been anything but smooth.
Carl Pavano
Could easily be an incomplete yet again, but with Tommy John surgery effectively ending his tenure in pinstripes, is there any grade more appropriate than a failing one?
以上が選手に関してだが、監督とGMは下記の通り。
どう考えてもトーリ‘情実’だろう。
Joe Torre: B-
Hard to blame him for proven veterans such as Damon and Abreu underperforming. Many teams would have mailed it in long ago, but Torre has done his best to keep clubhouse believing postseason remains a possibility.
Brian Cashman: D
Igawa signing has been a disaster, counting on Pavano was foolish, while the return on the Randy Johnson and Gary Sheffield trades looks shaky. Handing Clemens a blank check was a no-brainer, but Cashman may have to do more in the next month to save his job.
奇しくもと言うか、当然というか、Aランクの3人が先日のオールスターに出場した。
そこでジーターは後半に向けて‘大胆発言’をした。
'NO QUESTION WE CAN CATCH BOSOX`
まあ、キャプテンとしてはそう言うしかない。
いよいよ後半戦が始まる。
29試合連続で勝率5割以下の対戦相手という‘僥倖’をしっかりとモノにして欲しい。
